Start by looking for mysqld:

which mysql    which mysqld    pgrep mysql    ps aux | grep mysql

You should see a mysqld humming in memory. If you don't, start it.

Next, run any of these commands:

rake test    rake db:migrate    rake db:migrate:reset    rake db:fixtures:load

Next, read your database.yml file, and enter your development: settings on a command line:

   mysql -u root my_dev_database

You generally need to ensure you have a database, it is running as a daemon, you can log into it, and you can push your data into it.
