you might want to check out the Flex Image plugin available at:

The plugin is an absolultely fantastic and I'm sure you'll get a grip on it very fast. I find FlexImage to be way more easier to use than file_column. So give it a try.

I'd recommend using MacPorts for ruby and rb_rmagick installations. It simply works.
