Even if you could remove it from ruby-forum (and posts can be removed
from the associated google group, but only by someone with he right
permissions) it wouldn't do a whole lot of good as it has already been
emailed to several thousand people.

Sure, but if you say something on the forum/group when you're not thinking terribly clearly, you might want to delete it so that potential employers (or anybody else) won't come across your half- brained idea by doing a google search for your name. People on the list will hopefully forgive you, but you might not want the record posted for the world to see forever.

This is an email mailing list. What you say is final and will be propagated out to thousands of people and plenty of archive sites easily found via Google.
Just be careful of what you say if you're that worried.
