ROR apps sending to popular IM networks

Hi all,

Does anyone have experience having RoR send messages to popular IM services (AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, etc). Are people using Jabber gateways and XMPP4R? What about the various APIs from these networks?

I recommend libpurple, which is what pidgin/gaim/adium sits on (see http://pidgin.im/ if you don't know what I'm talking about), and the ruburple gem to interface with it.
