you might want to check out drb (http://www.ruby-doc.org/stdlib/libdoc/drb/rdoc/index.html) or have a look at ActiveResource from rails trunk (Rick Olson used to have a great writeup on his blog which seems to be down right now: http://weblog.techno-weenie.net/2006/12/13/taking-ares-out-for-a-test-drive)
